- About us
“Grain Buds” is the eighth of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms and the second solar term of summer. At this time, rainfall gradually increases in southern China, while wheat grains in the north begin to plump up. Hence the name “Grain Buds”.
Recently, each branch jointly organised a theme activity for Grain Buds. Through interaction, our family members learned about the features and customs of this solar term and gained a deeper appreciation for the profound traditional Chinese culture.
With introductions via PPT and videos, participants got to know local traditions for Grain Buds, including eating bitter greens, worshipping the waterwheel god, honouring silkworm deities, summer farming fairs, selling newly spun silk, checking ripening wheat and rushing to harvest and sow crops.
During Grain Buds, days grow longer than nights. High temperatures speed up metabolism and drain energy easily, making people prone to fatigue. Therefore, sufficient sleep helps maintain good health.
As temperatures rise, many people tend to take cold showers after coming back outdoors. This prevents internal heat dissipation and may lead to insufficient blood supply, causing dizziness in mild cases and even shock in severe ones. We should avoid overindulging in coldness and take warm baths instead.
In summer, gastric acid secretion reduces, and heavy water intake further dilutes it, weakening digestion. Meals should thus be light, with plenty of wholesome low‑carbon dishes.
We specially prepared bitter melon lemonade for everyone. Refreshing and tasty, it is rich in vitamins and other nutrients, an ideal summer drink to beat the heat. Some brave family members even tried raw bitter melon and quickly pulled on “bitter melon masks”, sparking waves of laughter across the venue.
“Grain Buds means wheat grains swell.” Everyone joined a DIY session to craft handmade wheat ears. They cut, wrapped, glued, decorated, adjusted and refined their works with dedication. Seeing their beautifully finished wheat ears filled everyone with a strong sense of achievement.
Grain Buds carries the heat of summer, swelling wheat ears and abundant rainfall. It stirs our reflections on time and our sincere hopes for a happy life.
